What famous expression is this?
Can you count the number of black dots in the image below?
It’s impossible to count! As soon as you focus on the black dots that are popping up, they disappear! This is because of lateral inhibition. Excited neurons sensing light through photoreceptors reduce the activity of their neighbors. This creates contrast, which is being exploited in this image. Scientists hypothesize that you see black dots due to this phenomenon, but it has yet to be confirmed.
What do you see?
When you first look, you might just see a bunch of black and white blocks. Then, all of a sudden the word “LIFT” shows up for most people.
Everything you see at first is your brain’s best guess. Once your mind makes sense of the picture, it’s impossible to unsee it. That’s because once your brain interprets it, your brain will always favour the lift hypothesis.
